Good evening, Reno! I’m Tiffany Jones reporting live from our studios here in the heart of the Biggest Little City. Tonight, we’re talking about something crucial for every Reno business owner: cybersecurity. To shed some light on this complex issue, we sat down with Scott Morris, a renowned IT Specialist right here in Reno.
Cyber Security
Scott, thank you for joining us tonight. What are the biggest cybersecurity threats facing small businesses in Reno today?
“Tiffany, it’s great to be here. Small businesses often mistakenly believe they aren’t attractive targets for cybercriminals, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Consequently, we see a lot of phishing attacks targeting Reno businesses, where criminals try to trick employees into revealing sensitive information like login credentials. Ransomware is another major threat. Just last year, a local restaurant here in Reno was hit with ransomware and ended up paying thousands of dollars to regain access to their systems.”
Backup And Disaster Recovery Solution
That’s certainly scary! What can small businesses do to protect themselves?
“A robust backup and disaster recovery solution is absolutely essential. Notwithstanding the initial cost, it’s a small price to pay compared to the potential devastation of losing all your data. Regularly backing up important files and systems ensures that you can recover quickly in case of an attack.”
Data Security
What about data security in general? How can businesses keep their customer information safe?
“Data security is paramount, especially with the increasing number of data breaches we see. Accordingly, I always recommend implementing strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and encryption for sensitive data. Moreover, regularly training employees on cybersecurity best practices is crucial.”
Just last month, I was working with a local retailer who had experienced a minor security breach. They were devastated, thinking their business was ruined. But because they had followed my recommendations for data security and had a good backup solution in place, we were able to quickly contain the breach and minimize the damage.
According to a recent study by Verizon, 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses (Verizon 2022 Data Breach Investigations Report).
